Sound Familiar?
We hear this from Perth parents every week.
My child knows how to write but completely freezes when the clock starts.
They spend so long thinking about what to write that they run out of time to finish.
I do not know where my child stands compared to other kids preparing for GATE.
Every tutor centre I call says they do GATE prep but nobody seems to specialise in it.
We have been doing general tutoring for months but I’m not sure it’s actually built for GATE.
Their reading comprehension is okay but the abstract reasoning section is a mystery.
I want to help my child but I genuinely do not know where to start.
I am worried they are going to walk out of the test feeling like they did not finish.
If any of these hit close to home, you are in the right place. Keep reading.
First, Let Us Quickly Explain What GATE Actually Is
If you are new to this, do not worry. Here is what you need to know.
GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Education. It is a WA Department of Education programme that gives academically exceptional students entry into selective schools including Perth Modern School. To get in, your child sits the Academic Selective Entrance Test, known as ASET. It covers four areas.
Reading Comprehension
Writing
Quantitative Reasoning
Abstract Reasoning
The full test runs for about 2 hours and 50 minutes. Your child sits it in Year 6 for entry into Year 7 in 2027.
Why is it harder now than it used to be? Applications have grown by 30 percent in just four years. The minimum score needed for Perth Modern School keeps rising. More families are starting preparation earlier and more seriously than ever before.
Your child does not need to be a genius to earn a GATE offer. But they do need structured, expert preparation. That is exactly what we give them.
Now that you know what the test is, here is the easiest way to start preparing.

A Closer Look at What We Teach
Each subject in GATE requires a different skill. Here is exactly how we build each one.
Writing — The section most students underestimate
Your child has 25 minutes. Including planning. We teach the Champion Method — a repeatable 3-minute planning structure that gives your child a clear response before they write a single sentence.
What your child will learn
1. How to plan any writing prompt in 3 minutes flat
2. Narrative and persuasive writing formats built for GATE
3. How to build paragraphs with a clear sequence and strong ending
4. How to use vocabulary that impresses examiners without overcomplicating
5. How to edit for accuracy in the time that is left
6. How to manage time during writing assessments
7. How GATE writing criteria work and how to meet them
Reading Comprehension — Not just about understanding
The reading section is about finding the right answer quickly from a complex text under time pressure.
What your child will learn
1. How to locate and infer meaning without re-reading the whole passage
2. How to handle vocabulary and inference questions with confidence
3. How to work through multiple-choice options efficiently
4. How to stay focused through longer and more complex texts
5. How to identify patterns in language
6. How to interpret logical arguments and conclusions
7. How to respond accurately under timed conditions
Quantitative Reasoning — Maths, but not as your child knows it
GATE quantitative questions require spotting patterns, thinking logically about numbers, and choosing the fastest route to the right answer.
What your child will learn
1. Number patterns, operations, and multi-step problem solving
2. How to approach quantitative questions systematically
3. Fractions, ratios, proportional thinking and data interpretation
4. How to work accurately and quickly under timed conditions
5. How to identify the most efficient solution path
6. How to interpret data and graphs
7. How GATE marking criteria work and how to meet them
Abstract Reasoning — The section most kids have never practised
Most students have never seen abstract reasoning before their first GATE prep session. With our structured approach, your child builds genuine understanding and speed.
What your child will learn
1. How to identify patterns in sequences and visual matrices
2. Spatial reasoning and visual problem solving
3. How to approach odd-one-out and analogy questions
4. How to spot rotations, reflections and transformations
5. How to navigate complex multi-step pattern questions
6. How to apply logic step by step rather than guessing
7. How to build speed and accuracy under timed conditions
Before you decide, here is a quick, honest look at how we compare with other tutoring centres.

Your Questions, Answered Honestly
These are the questions we get from parents every week.
When should my child start preparing for GATE 2027?
Honestly? Now. Students currently in Year 5 have the most to gain by starting early. A full year of structured preparation gives your child the best possible foundation going into the test in March 2027. If your child is in Year 6, do not panic. Our Intensive programme is designed exactly for this.
What year levels do you work with?
We work with Year 2 right through to Year 7. Foundation is for Year 2 and early Year 3. Accelerator is for Year 4 and 5. Intensive is for Year 6 students in their final stretch before the test.
Do you guarantee a GATE offer?
No. And any tutoring centre that promises that is not being honest with you. What we do guarantee is expert preparation, small group attention, real GATE-style practice, and a structured path that gives your child the best possible chance.
What exactly is the free Writing Workshop?
It is a free 2-hour session where we teach your child the Champion Method for GATE writing. They leave with a planning system they can use straight away and a free booklet to practise at home. No cost. No obligation. Piara Waters and Hammond Park. April only. Spots fill every single time.
What is included in the 5 Day Bootcamp?
Five full days of expert GATE preparation covering all four subjects. Days 1 to 4 focus on each subject with real GATE-style questions and timed practice. Day 5 is a full mock test run under real exam conditions with expert feedback from our GATE specialists. $300 total. Small groups only. April.
Where are your centres?
We have five locations across southern Perth: Harrisdale, Piara Waters, Hammond Park, Canning Vale, and Kwinana. There is a Champion Tutors close to most families in the area.
How will I know if my child is actually improving?
Every child starts with a diagnostic assessment. We track their progress through structured assessments and send you regular updates with results and practical guidance. You will never be left wondering. You will always know exactly how your child is going.
Can my child do the free workshop and then join the bootcamp?
Yes, and that is actually the path we recommend. Start with the workshop. See how your child responds. Then book the bootcamp if you want the full five day preparation experience. It is the best way to build momentum before April.
